about

lament
ləˈmɛnt
noun
1.
a passionate expression of grief or sorrow.
"his mother's night-long laments for his father"

It is a very unsettling time for the residents of the Jungle.
The French Government announced on Friday 12th February that they would be clearing the Southern section of the Calais camp.
This is the heart and soul of the make-shift refugee camp. It contains the majority of the self organised social, medical and educational amenities. These are the places that keep people going in the midst of an oppressive existence. It's where children play and learn, women sing songs of praise, medical volunteers administer vaccinations. It's where residents of the camp have been given a voice on Jungala Radio and where they can attend English and French lessons at Jungle Books. It's where kids young and old can fly kites and take part in plays and art projects in The Dome Theatre.
It contains the homes of up to 3,500 people including 445 children, 305 of them unaccompanied.
Although none of these people chose to live in the Jungle they have worked to make it liveable and it's all they have.
Now they await the verdict of an injunction hearing to delay the inevitable demolition of their homes.
I have found that the people I meet try to smile and stay positive. I was told one day to 'cry inside never outside'.
This collection of recordings is from Syrian and Sudanese friends in the Jungle and I think it conveys some of the sorrow and grief people are feeling. They are laments for people and places they have left behind. They are songs about love, loss and war.

All proceeds from downloads will be used to support Baloo's Youth Centre (for unaccompanied minors).
